Laminate Floor Installation Benefits From Professional Installation

Laminate floor installation can be a big project to take on, especially if you have an older home that has many crooks in the walls or the rooms aren’t quite square. This takes more work due to having to carefully cut the laminate to fit properly. Not having the right tools to do the job can also make it far more difficult. Many people have to rent tools to complete the job, even if the room that they are putting the laminate in is square. Combine this with back breaking work, and it is easy to see why hiring a professional to do the job is so popular. However, if you really want to try you hand at laminate floor installation, here are the basic rules to follow.

To start with, you have to remove the flooring that already exists. Preferably down to the subfloor. You simply can’t install laminate flooring over other floorings and end up with a professional looking job that will last a lifetime. However, sometimes you can install over linoleum if it was glued down fully, not just at the edges. You also need to remove the baseboards. Laminate floor installation requires that the laminate fit snugly under the baseboards. Be careful with this part of the process so that you don’t crack or break the baseboard. If you do, you will have to purchase new baseboard and install that, too.

Once you get down to the subfloor, you need to make sure that it is completely level. Any cracks, dips, divots, and holes must be attended too. Not doing this can warp or even cause your new laminate floor to be damaged or break under foot traffic. Now that’s taken care of, clean the floor very well. It is recommended that you not only sweep and mop, but run a vacuum over the surface and along the edges to make sure that all debris is eliminated.

Always put an underlay under your laminate. This is simple to do, just unroll it and cut it to fit. Tape it together so that it doesn’t shift while you are working. Without this very important item, your new laminate flooring can harbor and grow mold or mildew, which will cause odors and ruin the floor at the very least. Some mildew can even make you and your family very ill.

Begin the actual laminate floor installation in the middle of the room. Since the pieces snap together, it would seem a simple process, but you need to take care not to line up the sections evenly. Part of the charm of the floor is in the design of the planking. You also need to tap the board into place for a secure fit. Do this by using a small piece of scrap laminate and a rubber mallet. Lay the scrap against the edge, and tap it to force the sections to fit together more snug. Continue to do this until it is all placed.

Simply put the baseboards back on and give it a good cleaning. You can enjoy the beauty of your new floor immediately. However, if you have any trepidation about not being able to do the job accurately, or if time is a serious factor, it is always best to turn to a professional to get the job done, and done right.

7 Facts about Installation of Laminate Flooring

The installation of laminate flooring is one of the easiest home remodeling jobs that has a major impact on the looks of your home. Nearly anyone who can read directions can accomplish the task, as long as they learn quickly and especially if they get some information from an experienced source. Here are a few tips for the installation of laminate flooring.

1. Inspect the pieces before installation of laminate flooring. You will not want to spend your valuable time working with defective materials. Besides, you will want to return the carton of flooring to the laminate flooring company for a refund or exchange.

2. Store the flooring materials in the room to be redone for at least 48 hours or more before the installation of laminate flooring. This helps the flooring adjust to the moisture content and temperature in the room before you start placing it into position. You will prevent many problems with ill-fitting floors when you account for this initial expanding and contraction.

3. Laminate flooring is not a hardwood, but it is made of wood products. Therefore, you should avoid putting it in places where it will be exposed to a large amount of water, wet-mopping, or just heavy moisture. A bathroom is a poor place for the installation of laminate flooring, as are a kitchen and a sauna.

4. Read the manufacturer’s instructions thoroughly, because not all installation of laminate flooring is to be done in the same way. Some manufacturers recommend that their flooring be clicked and locked into place with the hands only. Other manufacturers require you to tap in the flooring with a mallet.

5. Make sure the floor is level before you start. There should be very little variance in the level of the floor – only about one quarter inch in eight feet. This is crucial because the installation of laminate flooring will be nearly impossible at worst and irregular-looking at best with an uneven floor beneath.

6. The installation of laminate flooring requires you to stagger the boards after the first row is completed. If you do not follow this step, you will have boards that end directly beside each other. The result looks unattractive, and it is also weaker and more unstable.

7. If you do not want to learn about how to put in your flooring, you can hire it to be done by an expert. Because it can be done by a contractor fairly quickly and easily, it is an inexpensive job to afford. There is no need to worry over the installation of laminate flooring, because one way or another you can get it done.

Professional Laminate Floor Installation Is Definitely Faster

After weeks of searching from one store to the next, you have decided on the particular laminate floor you want. Will you be installing the laminate flooring yourself or will you have a professional do it?

If you are going to install the flooring, you need to purchase a rubber mallet, a laminate flooring pull bar, tape measure, coping saw, utility knife, hammer, nails, and of course the laminate flooring.

If you have any type of flooring in the room that you are going to be installing the laminate flooring, it will all need to be removed. Make sure that you sweep and vacuum the floor and remove all of the debris. If there are any squeaks in the floor, install a 1 ½” screw into the floor joist next to the squeak. Any dips in the floor will need to be filled in and made level.

Remove all of the mop boards and door jams, while trying to keep them in one piece so that they can be reused. These will need to be put into another room, so that there are no obstacles in the way when you start to lay the floor.

Lay the moisture barrier out on the floor, this will keep moisture away from your laminate floor and prevent warping and bowing. Now you can lay out the laminate flooring; while leaving 1/4″ clearance from all walls.

Installation will now begin by using spacers to leave the ¼” between the wall and the first row of laminate that you are going to install. You will need to tack the first row of laminate every 10″ or so. As you start the 2nd row you will need to use the mallet and pull bar to get the board’s snuggly together. Tacking will need to be done at every other floor joist, and about every 10″ or so.

When you need to go through a door way, use a saw and utility knife to trim the laminate to fit. Some of the fittings may need to be sanded to fit. You can then adjust the planks so that they slide together. You can always use a minute amount of wood glue to hold the planks together.

Keep tacking the planks every 10″ or so and at every other floor joist, till you get to the last row. A template will need to be made for last row of laminate flooring that needs to be installed. Remember to leave the ¼” space between the wall and laminate flooring. A separate template may be needed if there are any kinks, wiring, etc. in the area of the last row.

Wow! You have the last row in, and now all that is left is to install the door jams and mop boards. Take a look at the magnificent job you have done. It is magnificent!

Now you can get the floor molding installed. Take a close look at it and make sure that it complements the new laminate flooring you just put down. Now would be the time to install new molding if you are thinking about it.

If the installation of the laminate flooring had been installed by a professional, this would all have been done by the crew. They would be the ones with the back ache, knees that hurt, and arms that feel like they have been overworked and suffering from muscle exhaustion. This could all have been done by them in a couple of days, and they would have taken all the old flooring, debris and waste away to be disposed of.
